Climbing the Corporate Ladder: Choosing a Mentor
The corporate world has a different set of rules compared to the rest of the work force. If you want to shape and propel your career, you have to do more than work hard. You have to work smart, network and keep abreast of industry innovations and standards. Today’s workforce is younger, smarter and more impatient than the workforce of generations past. Our generation is seemingly without loyalty, when it comes to sticking with a corporation for more than 1-2 years. However, on the contrary, today’s workforce, dubbed Generation Y, is stronger, faster and able to acclimate to evolving technologies. They network social media sites, creating more and more opportunities for themselves.
The transition for student to corporate climber can be a bumpy climb without good mentoring. The United States has a transient society, so it is not a surprise to see new college grads, packing up and moving from one coast to another for a job opportunity. I think for an individual new to the corporate sector needs to seek out information and resources to continue to grow and succeed in the corporate craze. The ability to know when to break the rules and make new rules is important when trying to set your apart from the rest. There is a certain level of aggressiveness and social skills needed to do well. Something for important for anybody new to the corporate world, would be to find a good mentor or role model to learn and succeed.
