Self-Confidence

Many adults struggle with self esteem, so it is natural that children would also feel a lack of confidence. Also, children of parents who have self-confidence issues will copy their parent’s example.

There is such a social skill deficit with children these days. Having manners, showing courtesy, and displaying mutual respect are part of every Karate class. It is nice that we have become “technically advanced,” but we do not have to leave tradition behind. As children grow, the child who displays manners, courtesy, and respect will succeed in life.

A lack of these qualities is considered anti-social, rude, or arrogant – and rightfully so. Some adults who display these forms of behavior do “get by,” but diplomacy can carry us a long way. Therefore, social skills are positively reinforced in each Karate lesson.

It’s always amusing when “know it alls” dismiss certain methods out of hand as being useless or “unworkable”. One “victim” of this line of thinking is the “cross arm” or “X” block (for lack of a better term).

We often hear phrases like the “myth of the X block”. Usually this catchy “hook” leads on to a diatribe condemning this technique in the strongest terms. Those who “know better” decry the “obvious” faults in this basic method and are more than anxious to point out the disastrous consequences awaiting anyone foolish enough to use it.

Let’s take another look at this:

For our example we’ll use the “standard” overhead X block against an overhand “ice pick” grip attack with a knife.

Now many “experts” will demonstrate how this “defense” can be “countered”. How the “defender” leaves himself open to any number of devastating “follow-ups”. One of the most commonly cited methods is the “ripping” slash that will severely cut the wrists of the defender. The attacker hammers down with his blade, the defender “cross arm” blocks and then the attacker rips down and back. Sounds good but is it REALISTIC?

Usually this is demonstrated by having Mr. Expert set up the scenario. The overhand stab comes in - the victim blocks - Mr. Expert shows how easily he can counter the attempted “defense”. Masterful. Real world? NO!

Why?

Consider the elements of real world violence.

The chance that either “party” involved KNOWS the ability or “training” of the other is very remote. So neither individual KNOWS before hand what the other will do, how the “victim” will react. A violent criminal attack is SWIFT, BRUTAL, and IMMEDIATE. The assailant is NOT looking for a fight, a duel, or a protracted engagement. He is counting on SPEED, SHOCK, and BRUTALITY. Think about this. If YOU were going to “off” someone, wouldn’t you do it in the MOST expedient manner? It would be ONE violent, powerful and swift attack. ADD to this RAGE, HATE, INTENT, and the DESIRE to commit mayhem and it should become obvious that the real world attack is NOT a “chess” game of move and “counter” move. If the assailant wants to “do” you he will attempt to accomplish this with ONE fully committed ASSAULT.

To mediate one’s attack in the real world is to invite failure! NO one is going to “half-step” in this regard.

The almost instinctive maneuver of the cross block is a SURVIVAL reaction. It is a convulsive gross motor skill designed to SAVE your life NOW. It is a brutal “attack” against the assault, NOT a passive “catching” of the attack.

The ruthless swift and brutal nature of the assault is designed to SHOCK and FREEZE the “victim”. The assailant is NOT thinking two moves down the road, HE IS THINKING NOW!

The victim who REACTS in kind, with a swift brutal and committed “defense” will gain a MOMENTARY advantage by this REACTION ATTACK.

SIMPLE PHYSICS: A body in motion tends to remain in motion. The assault was “intended” to succeed. The “failure” of this immediate assault will FORCE the assailant to make a CONSCIOUS decision after the initial “failure” of the attack! The “Oh SH!T” principle. Plan “A” failed, NOW WHAT. Certainly there may be a “counter” move or an attempted “follow up”, BUT IT WILL NOT BE SEAMLESS!

Only in the “training” environment do such seamless combinations of maneuvers “work”. And usually only when one party KNOWS what the expected “response” will be. Real life ain’t like that!

Let’s say I’m walking down the street and Joey Bag-a-donuts decides to ram a hunting knife into my neck or chest, well he doesn’t KNOW me from a can of beans, right? Does anyone believe that he will mediate his attack to the extent that he is considering MY response to his assault and then plans follow-up counters to my reaction? C’mon on. That makes NO SENSE. Unless he’s Kreskin, he has NO way of knowing what will happen after his initial attack. He’s NOT hedging his bets. He IS looking for the first strike/swift KILL.

The X “block” works for the purpose it was intended for. It CAN SAVE YOUR ASS! It must of course be chained to an immediate and violent attack, but as an “opening” gambit it serves its function well.

Also consider the contingencies of the real world. Many highly touted “defenses” include maneuvers that MAY very well be IMPOSSIBLE to pull off due to any number of unforeseen circumstances. I could put an individual in any number of scenarios that would all but eliminate ANY reaction other than the one we are discussing.

Charlie Nelson would often demonstrate a technique effectively only to have the bruised ego of the “know it all” respond with……”Ok, let me see you do that AGAIN”.

Charlie would respond……….”It only has to WORK ONCE”.

And that’s really the bottom line……..

It ONLY HAS TO WORK ONCE!

About four years ago Carl recommended we start using the Bogu during our kumite (sparring practice). This method was developed in Okinawa and then found its way into mainland Japan and eventually to the U.S. where only a few clubs still do this. And even in those clubs, only a few members do it. I know there is other equipment out there that looks similar and I have used most of what’s available. But it does not provide you with nearly the same overall effect that the bogu does. Rules in bogu training – Any punch, any kick, save foot stomps, a strike to the spine and to the back of the neck. Throws and leg kicking is certainly allowed. Use, dare I say, your commonsense.

What is the training like?

When you fight, you just go and beat the crap out of each other. This is the point. Sure, you look to get that “One Shot One Kill” but you have to train in a way that prepares you for reality. If you train to stop after that first shot- you are developing a habit that will come back to haunt you. You always train three techniques ahead.

Immediately, you will find out what works and what doesn’t work. Depending on the drill, sometimes we do rounds, sometimes 10 second bursts. There’s a little stalking- but when you go, it’s like two freight trains smashing into one another. You hit, you get hit, you lock up, you knee and you throw- great stuff. One of the first things you will notice is that when you punch or kick the hard surfaces of the bogu- it hurts. A body will feel like a feather bed compared to a bogu. But, after a while- it doesn’t hurt. Then you can start really throwing some lead!

You will also see what strikes have an effect and which ones do not. If you can back a guy up with the bogu on or ring his bell a bit- chances are it’s a good shot. If you graze him, he keeps coming and you have to keep fighting.

The bogu also teaches you to keep fighting! Lesser equipment will cause you to slow down and stop when things get critical. Or stop when one person scores the point. Scoring a point does not mean the fight has ended. It’s only a symbolic representation of it. It’s not literal.

Wearing the bogu allows you to take punishment without being seriously hurt- save the fat lip, sore legs, fingers, toes or sore jaw. You will get used to the shock of being hit. This will enable you to operate in that harsh environment of combat and it will allow you to absorb as much damage as possible. I have seen people develop other things that allow you to feel nothing. This isn’t really good either. It takes away the risk factor and all you have is two supermen running into one another with out any fear of pain. Plus it takes away the body conditioning element. As always, exercise caution and work at a level you can handle. When starting with people who haven’t done it before- take it a little easy so they can get used to it. After a couple times- then you can blast ‘em.

The MEN (Head Piece) of the bogu is extremely claustrophobic. This is an excellent way of replicating the effect of tunnel vision and frustration you feel when you are the hormonal stress of combat. Don’t talk to me about something for MACHO or even Shureido- unless it’s got the grill, it ain’t cutting it.

The head piece also provides neck and chin protection that modern head-gear do not. Again, the chest protector is HARD. This is important to develop power and condition your weapons.

Can you tell who wins and who loses? Well if the guy quits you win. If you quit, you loose. But that’s not the point. IT’S THE TRAINING. It’s the befit of fighting like this that you want; the overall training effect NOT winning a game. Sure there are tournament rules, but that will force you to stop when you should be fighting!! It’s the feeling of the fight, the punishment and the impact that counts. It’s dealing with the confines of the bogu. Just the simple fact that your training partner no longer has a face and is replaced by this samurai from hell is worth the price of admission.

Is it cheap, no- but do you value good training or do you want to used that foamed dipped crap. It’s up to you. This stuff will last you a life time.

A few weeks ago I was watching a television program called Celebrity Hobbies. This
is not something I would normally be interested in, but one of the guests was a
well-known entertainment personality who also happens to be a bowhunter. The
program highlighted his love of the outdoors and his passion for archery. He
commented about his penchant for things that are natural and the importance of
living off the land. He liked the idea of doing as our human ancestors did in
harvesting animal protein with a bow and arrow.

As I was watching this it struck me as funny when he sheepishly pulled out his
compound bow. Although I shoot a longbow myself, I have no personal problem
with those who choose to shoot a compound. However, this guy was clearly
embarrassed about shooting one. Especially considering his comments about how
we should all live as our Native American brothers. He did mention that he likes to
shoot a recurve, but preferred the compound because of its superior accuracy. This
is all well and good, but I got the feeling that there was something more.

They showed video of our man shooting his compound for a time and then showed
him with his recurve. As he drew his recurve back I could see some hesitancy as he
neared a full draw position. Next there was a slight shaking, and then he stopped
his draw about an inch or two short of full draw. Mercilessly, the camera cut away at
this point and showed the arrow hitting its mark. Now it became clear to me. He had
target panic.

Target panic is a very common problem that strikes many—if not most—traditional
archers at some point in their shooting lives. Compound archers get it as well, but
less often and less severe than their traditional counterparts. Bearing the full pull
weight of a bow is a major factor, as is the use of the fingers as opposed to a
release aid in loosening the arrow.

The two most common symptoms include a premature release and freezing outside
of the target picture. Target panic can be extremely difficult to get rid of and has
caused many traditional archers to give up the sport entirely or start shooting a
compound. My guess is that this is what happened to our celebrity.

In order to have a chance of curing target panic, it is important to understand the
exact cause—which can be traced to the very nature of archery. In Part II of this

introduce you to another famous bowhunter who has found a way to compensate
for his target panic.

When I talk to people about Iron Palm, they think that it’s just about breaking bricks. They even ask, “Why do you want to learn how to break bricks?”. Well, it’s not about breaking bricks. What it is about is cultivating and controlling your Chi, your internal energy.

I look at Chi and where it is stored like money and a bank account, a Chi account, if you will. Deposits have to be made, savings for our “golden years”. The more you know about cultivating it, and “depositing it into your account”, the more internal energy you’ll have when you need it the most.

Once we have an account built up, we have to be able to manage our account. We have to be able to move the energy where we want to, when we want to. That is the Mind-Body connection, to transmit energy where we command it to go.

This is Iron Palm training, this is what we’re after. The breaking of the bricks is strictly a training aid. It’s a measuring devise. It is also a way of losing Chi. You lose Chi from fighting, breaking bricks, and through sex. That’s why Semen Retention, is so vital. That’s why it is so important to makes deposits into your “Chi Account”, and not
withdrawls.

This is a problem that happens with most Iron Palm people.
They stop training because their capabilities become greater.

They think that they have the “heavy hand” and that they have some good techniques, so they slow down in their learning, in their training, and depend on their hand.

This has been a grave error that many a skillful martial artist have made. Fundamentals, the basics are always going to be necessary.

Grand Master Tung Sheng Chang, never trained his hand in Iron Palm. He trained his elbows. When I learned this, I began training my elbows as well. I did keep up with my palm training though.

This was the reason that he didn’t train his hand. He didn’t want to become dependent on this unique special training. He saw many men die from their dependency.

Think about it, the year is 1930, you master this special program, then several years afterward you begin slowing down in your training. Then you receive a challenge, you take the challenge. You feel as though your abilities will see you through. But once the fighting begins, you see the “rust” that has built up on you. You want so badly to land that one blow. The one that will end it, the one that will get you home tonight.

You can see the rest of the story. GM Chang, saw it too many times. How much knowledge went to the graves with these masters?

Most of the Iron Palm courses that are out there start the student off with the striking of a bag filled with mung beans. Then, they move up to the bag that is filled with gravel, all the while using the herbal medicine known as Dit Da Jow.

Dit Da Jow, is a simple formula we call bruise medicine. This formula will get rid of bruises, aches and pains, and so forth.
And, it might be a good formula for striking beans and gravel, but, for striking a canvas bag, that is filled with iron shot (about the same size as BB’s) this bruise medicine will not do.

One of the Herbalist that I use for our Iron Palm formula, told me that he and some of his students, put a little of my medicine on their hands, he then told me that their hands were tingeling. This man is an Herbalist, and he said that he had never felt this before.

Martial arts is a term that is used to describe a system of fighting that is very unique but often quite varied. The system has codes and rules to it.
